The idea of the original Mokona of Magic Knight Rayearth is actually based on one of CLAMP's members, Mokona Apapa, and the character was designed by Mick Nekoi. In the english edition of Magic Knight Rayearth (volume 1) produced by Tokyopop, there is a little chibi section with the details here.
